IDEC Competition Fall 2022
In rural El Salvador, Fernanda Sancho, a single mother, makes traditional jewelry as a means of subsistence for both her and her daughter Ana Sofia. Recently, violence has been on the rise in the neighborhood, and Fernanda feels she must leave to protect herself and her child. She wants to immigrate to the United States as many other Salvadorans do, but she doesn’t have the resources or know-how to do so right away. Deciding to make the journey in steps, She begins by packing as much as she can and catching bus routes up to Guatemala. She gets off in Moyuta, Guatemala, making her way to a refugee camp developing on the outskirts of the town.
